Do you need to tow a trailer and need the Category B+E licence?

Whether you are towing a large trailer, horsebox or caravan, you are legally required to obtain a category B+E licence if you have obtained your car driving licence after January 1997. The Category B+E licence will allow you to tow a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of over 750kg on a vehicle weighing 3.5 tonnes, or vehicle and trailer/caravan/horsebox combination of over 3.5 tonnes. The B+E test consists of the following requirements:


  • Ability to carry out safety checks on vehicles and trailers
  • Reversing exercise
  • Driving
  • Uncoupling and recoupling
  • B+E courses

    All our B+E courses include the use of our vehicle and trailer for B+E training and test purposes. All training is carried out on known DVSA test routes. Based on the LGV driving test, the B+E trailer towing test lasts for approximately 75 minutes. With our course, you will master driving, reversing, coupling and uncoupling the trailer.
